Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
